Item description
Geographical indication is an intellectual property right that is granted to products that have a specific origin from a geographical location and acquire qualities of that origin. These indications are used on the products which have certain specialties or qualities arising due to its place of origin. Geographical Indication is mainly granted to any natural, manufactured or handicraft product originating from any specific geographical region. Mostly geographical indications consist of the name of the place of their origin such as Mysore Saree, Darjeeling Tea, Pochampally Ikat, Banaganapalle mangoes.
Protection of geographical indications of goods is governed by Geographical Indication of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999. The main aim of the Act is to protect the interest of the producers of such goods and to promote their products in the market. An application can be filed by the person(s) or an association of persons or any organizations or authority established by or under any law for time being in force; representing interest in the concerned goods for geographical indications registration in India.
