BSL-2 laboratories are used to study moderate-risk infectious agents or toxins that pose a moderate risk if inhaled, swallowed, or applied to the skin inadvertently. Special lab coats, gloves, and face and eye protection should be worn inside the laboratory. Bacteria, viruses, and organisms associated with human diseases are among the biological materials used in a BSL-2 lab. Herefore, Biosafety Level 3 (BSL-3 lab) is applicable to clinical, diagnostic, teaching, research, or production facilities where work is performed with indigenous or exotic agents that may cause serious or potentially lethal disease via inhalation exposure.
